L
iverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes some of
his out-of-favour players could learn a lot from the
example set by midfielder Lucas Leiva.
The Brazil midfielder seamlessly slotted back into the
team for the 1-0 victory over Southampton in his first
appearance for three months after a thigh strain.
His performance underlined just how important he is to
the side and further highlighted how much he has grown
into a key figure after a difficult start to life at Anfield.
Lucas was signed by former boss Rafael Benitez from
Gremio for £5 in 2007 but, despite enjoying the support of
the manager, fans quickly turned on the then 20-year-old,
criticism which left him distraught at times.
Rodgers believes the likes of Stewart Downing and Jordan
Henderson, big-money signings who have failed to impress
in their first 16 months, could learn much from the
Brazilian.
“I think he is a wonderful example,” said the Northern
Irishman after Daniel Agger headed in Glen Johnson’s cross
for his first goal of the season at the end of a dominant first
half against the Saints.
“I know it was difficult for him as I have spoken to him at
length when he was sat in tears sometimes in the changing
room, it was so difficult for him.
“But what you have to have is that inner belief and the
support around you.
“I am sure in those early stages he would have had that
and it allowed him to continue to fight and his own person-
ality has seen him win through and now he is very impor-
tant.
“It will be the same for the other guys. Everyone gets the
opportunity and I would like to give the players the hope
they can succeed.
“So it might not have been so easy for some players
but everyone is important to me and they all have a
part to play.”

H
arry Redknapp believes the next
month will prove decisive to
QPR’s hopes of beating relega-
tion from the Premier League.
The Hoops sit bottom of the Premier
League after a winless start to the cam-
paign that extended to 15 matches,
equalling a record set by Swindon in
the 1993/94 season.
QPR have just six points to
their name after the 1-1 home
draw with fel low strugglers
Aston Villa, a game that kicks
off a month that recently
appointed boss Redknapp
believes will be vital.
“I think this December is
decisive,” the experienced
boss said.
“You’ve got
to see where
you are then,
haven’t you?
“If you’re
in touch, we can
get a couple of wins and keep
ourselves in there, then great
have a go.
“If not, you’ve got to be care-
ful. We’ve got to look at it and
see where we are.
“Hopefully we are in touch-
ing distance and can get a cou-
ple of players in that can make the differ-
ence and get out of it that way.
“At the moment, I’ve got what I’ve got
and we’ve got to get out of it with this
lot.
“We’ve got to close the gap, get
ourselves within at least touch-
ing distance of fourth from bot-
tom and if we can do that I
am sure we will have a go in
January.”
A key problem for QPR
seems to be their unbal-
anced squad, with some
areas overloaded with players
and others severely lacking.
Redknapp hopes a good
December will persuade the pow-
ers that be to bring in some new
faces when the transfer window
reopens, although he is wary of the
high turnover of players at Loftus Road
in recent times.
“We are okay in some positions and
desperately short in others,” the for-
mer Tottenham boss said.
“Obviously we’re short of front play-
ers, we’re short at centre half.”
