ATERHOUSE goalkeeper Richard ‘Spoon’
McCallum has kept a clean sheet in his last
five games, lifting the Drewsland team to
fourth in the Premier League standings.
On Sunday, December 2, Waterhouse blanked
Cavalier 2-0 at Stadium East. Captain Andre
Clennon headed home the opening goal in the 61st
minute. Gary McIntosh sealed the victory 12 min-
utes later.
Waterhouse’s victory ended Cavalier’s six-match
unbeaten run and avenged a first-round loss to the
promoted team.
McCallum, who had little to do in goal, told
SportGlobe
Waterhouse have strengthened their
defence.
“The defence has been excellent in the past
games. The coach has organised a way to try and
prevent teams from attacking our goal, but if that
doesn’t happen I try to come up with the big saves,”
he said.
The win pushed Donovan Duckie-coached
Waterhouse to 23 points, seven behind leaders
Harbour View (31).
McCallum believes Waterhouse can launch a seri-
ous run for the title.
“We have a good bunch of players, so if we can
keep everybody healthy we’ll have a good chance of
challenging for the title, he
said.
“Our next game is against
Savannah at Frome this Sunday
(December 9). Hopefully, we’ll con-
tinue to do the good defensive work, as
in the past five games, and come away
with a win.”
McCallum, 28, is a former Reggae Boyz
goalie.
NATIONAL TEAM
“I am not focussing on the national team. I am
focussing on Waterhouse and trying to help the
youngsters in the squad.
“I wish the national team all the best in the
upcoming Caribbean Cup and the World Cup quali-
fiers next year,” he said.
McCallum is an achiever. He won the daCosta
Cup and Ben Francis knockout
twice (2000 and 2001), and the
Olivier Shield title in 2001,
while attending Cornwall
College.
At the club level, he won the Premier
League with Waterhouse in 2006. He had
represented Wadadah and Invaders United
before moving to Waterhouse in 2004.
McCallum first represented Jamaica at the
Under-15 level in 1998 before
progressing to the Under-17s,
Under-20s and Under-23s
He made his senior team
debut on October 8, 2006,
against Canada at home. The
Reggae Boyz won 2-1 and
McCallum was praised for his
performance.
However, in subsequent years,
he was in and out of the team
before losing his place.
