T
urin-born Claudio Marchisio scored
twice as Juventus saw off the chal-
lenge of 10-man Torino to
extend their lead at the top of
Serie A to five points.
Following a red card for Kamil Glik
in the 36th minute, it seemed to be only
a matter of time before Juve struck.
After Andrea Pirlo missed a penalty,
Marchisio broke the deadlock in the
57th minute with Sebastian Giovinco adding a
second 10 minutes later.
Marchisio wrapped up victory five minutes
from time as the Bianconeri returned to winning
ways and warmed up for a trip to Ukraine when
they face Shakhtar Donetsk in a decisive
Champions League fixture.
The complexion of the
game changed in the 36th
minute when Glik was
shown a straight red
card for a dangerous
lunge at Emanuele
Giaccherini.
Torino resis-
ted until half-time but it was not long before
their defence was breached.
Pogba headed a seemingly easy chance
over the bar from five yards out in the
49th minute, but Juve’s pressure finally
told in the 57th minute when Marchisio
dived in bravely to head in a cross from
the right.
Ten minutes later Giovinco wrapped
up victory with a well-struck shot
beyond the reach of Gillet.
Pogba was denied again in the 70th minute as
Gillet saved instinctively with his legs from the
Frenchman’s header before Nicklas Bendtner
shot straight at the goalkeeper.
Torino bravely tried to respond, but
Marchisio’s second goal of the
game, a mirror of Giovinco’s
goal from the other side of
the penalty area, ended
their hopes in the
84th minute.
Juventus stay five clear
AP
Juventus’ Claudio Marchisio cel-
ebrates after scoring during their
Serie A match against Torino, at
the Turin Juventus stadium, Italy,
Saturday, December 1.
N
apoli kept up their pur-
suit of Juventus at the
top of Serie A and sent
out a message to their title rivals
with a comprehensive 5-1 win
over Pescara at the Stadio San
Paolo.
Gokhan Inler and Edinson
Cavani both grabbed a brace each
with Marek Hamsik also on tar-
get as Walter Mazzarri’s side tore
Pescara to shreds.
Birkir Bjarnason had given the
visitors hope when he reduced
the arrears in the first half, but a
red card to Antonio Bocchetti
capped a day to forget for
Cristiano Bergodi’s men in
Naples.
In response to Juve’s 3-0 win
over Torino, Napoli were straight
onto the attack in the lunchtime
kick-off with Hamsik testing
Mattia Perin early on.
Inler gave Napoli the lead in
the 10th minute as he jinked past
Romulo Togni before sending in a
powerful shot which Perin was
unable to reach.
Five minutes later Hamsik
made it two, pouncing on the ball
after former Pescara striker
Lorenzo Insigne’s effort was
blocked, and dispatching it past
Perin.
Pescara showed their first signs
of life three minutes later with
Bjarnason scoring his first goal in
Serie A with a header.
Cavani was then denied by
Perin as Napoli looked to restore
their two-goal advantage.
Not only did they do that in the
58th minute, but they were given
a man advantage after Bocchetti
was sent off for denying a
goalscoring opportunity by foul-
ing Cavani inside the box, and
the Uruguayan striker made no
mistake from the spot.
Cavani put the result beyond
doubt in the 63rd minute with a
shot which cannoned in off the
underside of the crossbar.
Inler added a fifth in the 78th
minute with a shot from distance
as Napoli comfortably moved
back to within two points of Juve.
Napoli maintain chase
AP
Napoli’s Edinson Cavani, of Uruguay, right, scores on a penalty kick during
their Serie A match against Pescara, in Naples, Italy, Sunday, December 2.
A
C Milan built on victory
over champions Juventus
by coming from behind to
post a hard-fought 3-1 Serie A
victory over Catania at the
Stadio Angelo Massimino.
Nicola Legrottaglie opened the
scoring after 11 minutes with a
powerful header, but it all start-
ed to unravel for the Rossazzurri
after the interval.
Midfielder Pablo Barrientos
was sent off three minutes into
the second half, and the
Rossoneri swiftly capitalised on
their extra man with goals from
Stephan El Shaarawy and Kevin-
Prince Boateng.
Boateng’s dismissal at the
death evened up the personnel,
but the visitors nevertheless
grabbed the game’s only remain-
ing goal as El Shaarawy struck
again to seal the points.
The result lifted Massimiliano
Allegri’s side up to seventh in
the standings, two points above
their opponents.
Milan almost went ahead in
the sixth minute when Boateng
latched on to Robinho’s pass and
got his shot away, only to be
denied by Catania goalkeeper
Mariano Andujar.
And five minutes later the visi-
tors were behind, Legrottaglie
despatching Francesco Lodi’s
corner into the top-right corner.
