B
ayern Munich saw
their winless streak
against
Borussia
Dortmund extended to five
matches with a 1-1 draw as
their
lead
atop
the
Bundesliga was trimmed to
eight points.
Toni Kroos gave Bayern the
lead in the 67th minute, only to see
Mario Goetze equalise seven minutes
later.
The result al lowed Bayer
Leverkusen, who beat
Nurnberg 1-0, to cut
Bayern’s advantage, while
third-placed Dortmund,
who had won their pre-
vious four league meet-
ings with Bayern,
remained 11 points off the pace.
When the deadlock was bro-
ken midway through the sec-
ond period it was the home
fans who were celebrating.
Kroos, who collected a pass
from Thomas Muller, danced
past Neven Subotic and
Hummels and blasted
home a low left-footed
shot.
The lead lasted only
seven
minutes,
though. Reus’ corner
from the right was
headed away by
Mario Mandzukic
but only to Goetze,
who had space and
time to chest the ball
down and strike into
the bottom-right corner.
Mul ler nearly scored
Bayern’s second goal in
the 85th minute but his
left-footed drive flew inches wide.
And Kroos too thought he had
snatched a winner a minute later
but Dortmund goalkeeper Roman
Weidenfel ler came up with a
superb reflex save.
Weidenfeller showed his class
on two further occasions against
Muller and Javi Martinez in the
closing stages to frustrate
Bayern, who had to set-
tle for a share of the
spoils.

B a y e r n Munich at the
Bundesl iga summit after Stefan
Kiessling’s first-half goal secured three
points against Nurnberg on Saturday
afternoon.
Kiessling scored the
only goal of the match in
the 37th minute as
Leverkusen picked up
their fourth win in a row
- and sixth in their last
seven games - to move
onto 30 points.
Nurnberg, who had
picked up points in four
of their last five matches,
remained in the lower
echelons on 16 points.
EIGHT MINUTES
Leverkusen showed
Nurnberg how it was
done in front of goal
eight minutes before the
interval. Andre Schurrle
fed Kiessl ing, who
turned and then struck
his shot past Nurnberg
keeper Raphael Schafer.
The away team had
two more chances short-
ly after the break but
Mike Frantz shot over
the bar in the 50th
minute and Polter head-
ed over a minute later.
Leverkusen could have
put the result beyond
doubt in the 82nd minute, but Schafer
made a superb save from Simon Rolfes’
effort.
The hosts went close one more time
three minutes later but Rolfes’ blasted
cannoned off the right post.
S
chalke’s dismal recent
form continued as they
were held to a 1-1 draw
at home by Borussia
Monchengladbach.
Igor de Camargo put the
Foals in front and Schalke
were only able to snatch a
point late on thanks to a
goal from Julian Draxler.
However, the result leaves
them still a point behind
third-place
Borussia
Dortmund, five adrift of
Bayer Leverkusen and still
12 behind league leaders
Bayern Munich.
Schalke had picked up just
a single point from their last
three games to slip from sec-
ond to fourth.
That mini slump did not
seem to have put them off
too much, though, as they
started brightly at the Arena
AufSchalke, attacking their
guests with intent.
Schalke continued to
attack in the second half too,
but Gladbach continued to
resist before scoring on the
counter-attack in the kind of
fashion which saw them fin-
ish fourth last season.
De Camargo beat Timo
Hildebrand, who had been
selected by Huub Stevens
ahead of Lars Unnerstall,
with a toe-poked shot which
silenced the Arena.
There was only one possi-
ble response from Schalke
and that was to beef up their
attack, which they did with
Ciprian Marica and Teemu
Pukki both introduced.
Their endeavours were
finally rewarded in the 85th
minute when Draxler found
room at the far post to con-
vert Pukki’s cross and sal-
vage a point for the Royal
Blues.
