T
he concept for the original GTI began as
a clandestine project by an enthusiastic
group of Volkswagen engineers in 1973.
By the time it was launched, it had become
an instant classic!
The VW Golf GTI is perhaps the most iconic
of all hot hatches and a mainstay to this day
in the hot-hatch segment after seven genera-
tions.
HOT HATCH REDEFINED
The Volkswagen Golf GTI almost defines the term
‘hot hatch’, originally used for small pocket rockets
designed for high performance over practical pas-
senger or cargo carrying capacity.
The
market
demands that today’s
hot-hatch Golf GTI
has evolved into a
small family car with
broad market appeal.
Volkswagen has managed to create a perfect blend
of nostalgic performance, harkening to the roots of
the GTI while incorporating family style, comfort
and convenience. It offers family sedan convenience
infused with performance DNA.
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-wheel drive,
front-engine replacement for the air-cooled, rear-
engine, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle.
Those were already iconic best-selling boots to
fill but, historically, the Golf has long
become Volkswagen’ s top-sel l ing
model with more than 29 million
built by 2012!
Volkswagen continues on a mis-
sion to become the world’s num-
ber-one car brand by 2018.
To accomplish that goal, the
Golf continues to assume the
mantle of flag-bearer for the
group, and the GTI demonstrates the epitome of
what VW engineers can achieve with the Golf.
2013 ATL UNBEATABLE GOLF GTI
You can immediately recognise the 2013 Golf
GTI by its styling that differentiates it from any
other hatchback.
The GTI has edgier bodywork and lower and
wider dimensions than before. Wheelbase and
overall length grows slightly to increase interior
volume.
The interior packaging is unrivalled in class, the
Golf GTI is chock-full of high-quality materials and
innovative features.
Think eight-inch touch screen on top of the centre
console that will work like an Apple iPad or iPhone
and provide radio controls and navigation, as well
as in-car Internet access.
Brawn is provided by 300 thoroughbred ponies in
the powerful, fuel-efficient TSI engine. This is a
match made in motor-engineering heaven!
THE FUTURE IS GREEN
The current generation of Golf is designed to be
adaptable to a number of alternative powertrains
and designed to be powered by compressed-gas,
batteries or hybrid units.
ADVERTORIAL
A hybrid Golf, dubbed ‘Twin-Drive Golf’, will have a
31-mile electric range which increases to 372 miles with
use of the petrol engine. VW expects to sell 300,000 elec-
tric vehicles per year by 2018.
